Database for the project Biographical Studies on Leopoldina Members under National Socialism
This database is part of the project “Biographical Studies on Leopoldina Members under National Socialism” and one of its key outcomes. The project examined the life courses and actions of selected Leopoldina members during the National Socialist era. It built on existing scholarship in the history of science and biography, supplemented by intensive research of its own. Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, the project was carried out at the Leopoldina Center for Science Studies and completed in July 2026.
The database contains a total of 2,363 members of the Leopoldina who were scientifically active during the Nazi era.
Under “Members” you will find a list of all recorded members. The “Data analysis” section offers tabular and visual representations of selected categories—for example an overview of elected members over time. It also includes the election network of Leopoldina members. As a network graph, it shows which members proposed new candidates and by whom members were co-opted. The network can also be viewed in combination with different categories.
